Custom-Made Magnets

What is „Standard“ - what is „Specialisation“?

Magnets are defined standard and special issues in several criteria:
1. Shape: Disc magnets, rods, block and cube magnets, ring magnets and spheres (balls) are standard, pot magnets with countersink or cylinder bore or external or internal stud is standard also. If magnets are extremely small or large, thick or thin, long or wide, this can be specialised magnets. And all shapes which are not symmetric or have more than three dimensions (length, width, height) are not standard. Especially segments almost always require a custom-made product.
2. Direction of magnetisation: Neodymium and ferrite magnets are regularly magnetised through their height. Block and rod magnets of AlNiCo are usually magnetised through their length. All magnets with diametrical, radial or multipolar magnetisation directions are custom-made products; this can be very demanding, especially regarding ring magnets.
3. Maximum operating temperature: NdFeB-magnets accept maximum temperature of 80°C, ferrite magnets tolerate about 250°C, SmCo-magnets about 350°C, AlNiCos about 450°C or even higher (depending on grade of magnetisation). Higher temperatures are custom-made, especially neodymium magnets can be produced with max. operating temperature up to more than 200°C.
4. Grade of magnetisation: Grade of magnetisation is given by N and a number between 35 and 52 for neodymium magnets, Y and a number between 10 and 35 for ferrite magnets. The higher the number the stronger the magnet. AlNiCos are graded Al and have a number between 2 and 9. If you buy cheap magnets they are almout always weak, if you buy magnets from a special shop like ours you mostly get medium strong magnets because highest grade of magnetisation makes magnets more brittle and prone to breakage. So sometimes special grades of magnetisation cause custom-made products.
5. Coating: Neodymium magnets need a coating because neodymium is reacting to oxygene and magnets corrode if coating is missing or damaged. Standard coating is NiCuNi (three layers in nickel-copper-nickel). You can choose a forth coating, e.g. gold, chrome, epoxy, zinc, or others; this is a special version. All other magnet materials are often not coated so if you require a coating it might be a custom-made product then. 
6. Depending on the deviation of one (or more) parameters from the standard variant, the material composition and/or the manufacturing method of a magnet changes. Every change in one property also affects the others.

Custom-Made Magnets

Developing and production of custom-made magnets needs time. The more complex your need, the more time is needed, because custom-made magnets shall be as precisely made according to your need as possible. Minimum time for production and transport is 4-6 weeks if your magnets can be shipped by air. If shipping by sea is necessary minimum time is about 12 weeks. Minimum order value is 250 Euro. To realise custom-made magnets please check the following aspects:

- Please contact us as early as possible when you plan to use magnets. Maybe then we can help you to avoid custom-made magnets or find less complicate solutions - however, we need some time to check if your ideas are practicable.

- Please send us a technical drawing if possible. We send them to our manufacturers only and in anonymised form. If you prefer we sign a non-disclosure agreement.

- If you have already tried magnets please send us all information about these magnets and tell us if they are too weak, too strong, too big, too small - these information are important to get an impression of your ideas. We appreciate if you send pictures of your machine or place where you want to find a magnetic solution for.

- Please submit your time schedule. We need this information to plan the kind of transportation we have to choose.

- Please tell us if you want to get the whole quantity at once or if you want to fix an annual framework contract.

- Developing custom-made magnets sometimes need more than one contact only. Sometimes it can be helpful that you visit us in Schlangen or we meet at your company if it is not too far away.

- We send you an individual offer after we've checked all aspects. Due to fluctuating raw material prices, transportation prices and exchange rates our offers the prices regularly can only be kept for 2-4 weeks. In some cases we ask for pre- or advance payment.
